Update - Current Situation ...

Hi All,

If you are having withdraw symptoms, from JB, I'm very sorry. However, things are moving forward.

There has been much discussion (exchange of e-mails, re ideas, etc.,) amongst the technical team, and Andy, G0JLX, has been putting in lots of time and effort, in coming up with the design for a NEW, as it was described to me, "solid state" dump load. I believe that this is now starting to take on some form of physical as well as theoretical, shape.

But, don't get too excited, there is still significant work to be done in this area, and the new system will of course need rigorous testing, before installation. As Andy put it, "I hope to be able to design and build a very robust solution that will provide JB with a really first class solution for the long term."

With regard to the batteries and the antenna/mast. This is all in hand. Replacements are available.

Thank you to all who have kindly offered / provided support, both in terms of replacement hardware and financially. It is very much appreciated.

Thanks to all those of you who have contacted us, with suggestions and offers of support. As far as I am aware, either I or Jan have responded directly to you.

We'll attempt to keep you all up to date with developments, as best we can.

GB3JB Off Air ...

Hi All,

Well the very strong winds finally took their toll on the installation.

I had a phone call from Barry, 2E0ZVR, at about 1:30 pm today, telling me that the mast was at 45 degrees or so, and that a couple of the guys had snapped.

Paul, (my son) and I headed to the site to see what could be done.

Nothing useful, in terms of keeping it on the air, I afraid.

GB3JB was switched off at approx., 2:00 pm local time today, Thursday 5th January 2011.

The mast has a bend of about 45 degrees at the point where the two sections are joined.

The two guys had snapped. They were middle guys, and had snapped about two thirds of the way up their length.

Neither of these two points are really very major and can be easily remedied, when the WX settles down.

However, the antenna also has a bend of about 30 to 40 degrees off vertical, just above the 1st join. This will need some detailed investigation.

More importantly, the replacement DUMP LOAD (installed last year) has failed - burnt itself out, just like the previous one.

I am not sure what state the batteries are in either. The volts across the nominal 24 volt rail were up at 32 volts.

The batteries themselves had obviously been gassing as there was quite a noticeable smell and obvious bulges in the sides of them. They were also uncomfortably hot to touch, in places.

The current situation at the site is:

1. Repeater OFF - until further notice.

2. Possible need for replacement antenna.

3. Antenna and masting down, now secure inside the barn.

4. Battery system isolated.

5. Probable need to replace battery system.

6. Turbine removed, as no way of stopping it from turning at the time of the visit, and no dump load to connect it to.

I would suggest that it could well be some time before JB is back on air.

I perceive that our technical team will need to get their collective heads around the obviously ongoing problem of a dump load. As the proprietor unit sold with the Turbine is obviously not up to the task.

Hi All,

Just to confirm that I put the repeater back on again at approx., 5:30 pm on Saturday evening, 30th.

All the batteries had been back at home being recharged and cycled, etc. All appeared to be holding a charge.

For those who have sent e-mails asking various questions, I'll attempt to answer them here. Thanks for your interest.

1. Why 24 volts and not 12 volts.

Well. All the kit runs from 12 volts, just like your 2m mobile rig. Most deal with 13.8 volts +/- 10% without too much trouble, but don't like it much when they start to see 11 volts or so.

By using a 24 volt system we can use a dc to dc converter, which can deal with a 17 volt to 32 volt swing in input voltage, and still hold a 13.6 volt stabilised output, at up to 24 amps continuous.

Using 24 volts also means that we are generating the power we need at a much higher voltage, and lower current. Easier to overcome voltage drop in the long run of cable between the turbine and the battery / converter system. The system is more efficient, overall.

2. Why 12 volt batteries and not 24 volt batteries.

Yes, as most of you concluded, PRICE.

However, physical size and weight also comes into it.

The two primary batteries are 12 volts @ 250 AH deep discharge leisure batteries, and two people can just about manage a short distance lift. I dread to think about trying to move a single 24 volt @ 250 AH Battery !!!!!!

3. The dc to dc Converter.

Yes, it's a real PWM converter, not just a linear series 24 volt to 12 volt dropper.

The unit employed is a PV24s - see Alfatronix web site.

4. Current System.

The above three points should give you a good idea as to the system, as far as the output of the dc-dc converter, at nominally 13.6 volts, which feeds the repeater.

There is another stage, which provides support at 12 volts. This having been put in when the panel was stolen.

I had been rebuilding this system, whilst the repeater was off air.

The simplistic system is 2 x 12 volt @100 AH, Gel batteries, which are connected into the 13.6 volt supply to the repeater, via a simple steering-diode network.

When the output of the dc-dc converter is there, it feeds current to the repeater and floats the 12 volt batteries, via isolating diodes.

If the output of the dc-dc converter falls below the terminal voltage of the 12 volt battery, then current is supplied to the repeater from the 12 volt battery.

The output from the dc-dc converter is therefore isolated, by a reverse biased diode and only the nominal dump-load / regulator control system current (approx., 100mA) continues to be drawn from the 24 volt system.

Thus giving the 24 volt system a chance to recharge a bit before it takes over the system again.

Hopefully that makes sense.

As I said, it is a very simplistic system, and could well be enhanced into something more robust.

Hopefully when the SP is replaced and the system is more or less back to full normality, the full technical group will get their collective heads together, and modify / replace, as they see fit.

5. Solar Panel.

Yes, this has taken quite a while to sort out, and NO, I'm not going into the details here.

However, I am anticipating a cheque to drop onto my door mat, anytime soon. I guess, in insurance company lingo, that means that it could be another 6 months .... Hi Hi.

Anyway, as soon as it arrives, have not doubt that we shall be hot-footing it to the PV supplier for a replacement panel.

That means that The technical team will then have to make a final decision about mounting method and location.

6. Current Operation.

Since returning the repeater to operation on Saturday afternoon, I have been back to the site both yesterday, and this morning to check battery and system voltages. All appears to be OK.

I will not have a hence to go back again tomorrow, but will take another look on Wednesday morning.

The system is operating at its nominal levels.

Finally, thanks to all who have offered suggestions and thanks for the effort that myself and others put into GB3JB. It is nice to know that our efforts are appreciated.

GB3JB Off Air...... AGAIN !

Hi All,

Sorry, but I had to switch JB off again this morning. At approx., 10:30 am.

It appeared to be not quite right when I checked it at around 9:30, so I decided that a trip to the site was called for.

Upon inspection, one of the two 12 volt 135 AH batteries, that are connected in series, to produce the primary 24 volt d.c. supply, was basically dead. The on load terminal voltage, was down at 5.3 volts ! Probably un-recoverable now. The other battery was at 9.9 volts.

I have therefore switched everything off. Although I have left the turbine, which was turning a slow but steady rate, connected to the batteries, while I attempt to resolve the situation.

The only comment I would pass at this time is that in every case, so far, where we have had trouble with the 24 volt supply, irrespective of the type of battery that has been installed, it has been the lower battery, i.e. the one sitting with the negative terminal at zero volts, that has discharged faster than the other. i.e. the battery who's negative terminal has been sat at the 12 volt level.

The only other comment I would make is that we did not have so much trouble, in this respect, when the 24 volts capacity was made up of a series / parallel network, of lower capacity batteries.

Anyone any ideas ?

So until I can get the combined intelligence of the Technical Team to resolve the problem, this could be on going for a while.

I will try to have something sorted on a temporary basis, tomorrow (Sunday 24th July), but no promises.

GB3JB Back On ...

Hi All,

Just to confirm that GB3JB was switched back on at 3:55 pm yesterday afternoon, 16th July.

Upon inspection the 24 volt battery system had recovered sufficiently overnight, to re-connect the repeater system via the GB3WX dc to dc converter. This having been installed some time ago in preparation for the earlier test transmission's and the final installation of GB3WX.

The 12 volt back-up system has not yet been put back in place as the original dc to dc converter and back-up batteries are still under investigation.

GB3JB Off Air

Hi All,

Sorry folks, but GB3JB is off air.

It was switched off at approx., 3:30 pm, this afternoon, 15th July 2011.

Following on from my visit to the site with Barry, two days ago, when we found the blown fuse on the converter input, the 12 volts batteries flat and the 24 volt rail OK, we visited the site this afternoon to check that all was OK.

Unfortunately, they were not.

The 12 volt system was fully charged, but despite the fact that the turbine was going '19 to the dozen', the 24 volt batteries were FLAT !

Although, the dc converter still appears to be providing 13.8 volts output, from a nominal 24 volt dc input, it appears to be drawing excessive current, and dragging down the 24 volt batteries, despite the output from the turbine, to around 12 to 13 volts.

At this time, the dc to dc converter has been removed for investigation. The 12 volt batteries have been removed. The turbine is recharging the 24 volts battery system. The repeater is OFF.

When I've had a chance to look at the converter and the feed to the 12 volt batteries, I'll advise regarding the return to service.

Whats Wrong With JB ..... Absolutely Nothing !

Hi All,

Earlier this afternoon, I had a phone call to my mobile, telling me that there had to be something wrong with GB3JB as the individual concerned was having trouble contacting another station, and that the signal was going down and down.

I'm afraid I did cut the conversation very short, as I was under the canopy of a petrol station in Taunton, just about to fill-up and getting very EVIL looks from the attendant.

Anyway, I had noted that it was its usual signal strength from home, when checked early this morning and having listened to various conversation whilst driving to Taunton, I thought it unlikely that there was any real problem, unless it had suddenly occurred.

I had also been able to access JB from level 2 of the multi-storey car park, at Musgrove Park Hospital. Having spent most of the afternoon at the Hospital, undergoing yet more tests !

However, during the short phone conversation, the individual appeared quite insistent that JB had a problem and that I ought to get to the site.

Throughout, the journey home, I found that I was able to access JB, on 5 watts to a 5/8th wave on the rear wing of the car, from every location that I tried it, including the traffic jam I was sat in outside the Police station in central Taunton.

I thus assumed from this that there was not a problem with the antenna.

Upon arriving home, I check JB and all appeared to be OK, but bearing in mind who the individual was, I decided to go up to the site and check things out - I gathered the kit together and was driven to the site.

Initial visual inspection indicated that there was no obvious physical damage to the antenna or feeder.

The VSWR was as expected, less that 1.15 to 1 with no obvious fluctuations as the antenna and mast moved around in the gusty wind.

The power into the antenna feeder, from the cavities was as expected, also with no obvious fluctuations.

The nominal 12v d.c rail was steady at 13.07 volts on RX, dropping to 12.97 on TX.

The nominal 24v d.c. rail was steady at 26.7 volts on RX, dropping to 26.6 on TX, with the turbine stationary.

With the turbine charging, the 24v d.c. rail was going up to 27.3 volts and the dump load was switching in.

Therefore, I think from this we can deduce that the battery system is fully charged, the antenna system is OK, the RX is OK and the TX is OK.

So. Whats wrong with JB ... Absolutely Nothing !

A 26 mile round trip, an hour and a half and a gallon of fuel later, thanks to the BANK HOLIDAY weekend and Friday evening traffic, may I respectfully request that before you go pressing the panic button, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, ensure that your perceived problem is not closer to home.

Perhaps check to see if anyone else, other than the individual that you are having a difficult QSO with, is having the same problem.

GB3JB Back On Air ...

Hi All,

At some point (actual time being unknown) over night, (24/25th), GB3JB closed itself down.

Several cells in the 11+ year old Telecom battery system, which had been causing me concern, since the theft of our Solar panel, finally gave up the ghost.

The brand NEW 250 AH 24 volt battery system, which I had purchased at the end of last year, was installed during the early part of the afternoon and the GB3JB system was switched back on at 3:30 pm local time today, the 25th March 2011.

As you all know, we are always looking for ways to support the GB3JB repeater.

Normally, this takes the form of us asking for you to donate money.

However, this year we are going to be attending various Rallies, and that means we are looking for things to sell, to raise money for GB3JB.

So to all of you, who may not have donated shiny pound coins, etc., how about donating that bit of old kit you have not switched on in years, or that bit you purchased for that project you never started or completed.

PLEASE , please, please, not your junk that no one in there right mind would buy in a month of Sundays; that you can't bring yourself to throw away.

If you have any items of equipment that you would like to donate to us, please let us know, as soon as possible. Then we can make suitable arrangements for getting it to the Events Team.

Antenna Replaced .....

Hi All,

GB3JB went off air at approx., 11:25 am, and came back on air at approx., 3:25 pm, today, 17th February.

The main antenna, as expected, was showing signs of considerable ware and the antenna assemble was loose in its machined mounting. I guess that's what 4 years on a very exposed site, does for a standard amateur dual-band collinear.

The antenna was replaced and the feeder was re-run down the inside of the main mast, rather than down the outside. This did require a longer feeder, approx., 15 feet longer, but this should have only a minor effect on the overall system capability.

Thanks to Chris G3VEH and Stephen M0SMM, for their invaluable assistance, it was very much appreciated, and further thanks to Neil G7EBY for his kind donation of the replacement antenna.

NEWS Update - 7th February

Hi All,

News Update.

The following text, with a few minor changes / additions was blanket e-mailed out yesterday evening.

Technical Group.

Following on from last Sundays' very successful meeting, the technical group (Andy G0JLX, Clem G3UGR, Chris G3VEH, Dave G3ZXX, Rod G4ZUP, Neil G7EBY, Frank G8PCB) had its first site meeting, today the 6th Feb.

The primary purpose was enable the Andy, Chris, Frank, Neil and Rod, to familuraise themselves with the site and the repeater hardware.

Having done so, we all then had a meeting at the Bell and Crown in Zeals to discuss initial actions, which will involve some work on the control system and the antenna. This work will commence next Saturday, the 12th.

This will mean that GB3JB will be off air for a short period of time, on Saturday morning, to facilitate the work on the controller.

However, subject to the WX, it may be off for most of the morning and early afternoon, as if it is dry and not windy, the Antenna will be replaced.

This is now quite obviously damaged with a 20 to 30 degree lean in a South Easterly direction, but it is still exhibiting an acceptable VSWR, although, now much higher than when originally set-up. We anticipate that the replacement of the antenna will resolve the 'scratchy' signal, problem.

RSGB News.

We are looking for 2, 3 or even 4 individuals who are prepared to read the RSGB News via the repeater. Unfortunately, you must be a member of the RSGB for this purpose and must also be able to put a consistently good signal into the repeater, for obvious reasons.

If your are interested, please let us know, as soon as possible.

Fund Raising and Promotional Activities Coordinator.

Jon, G0IUE, has offered his services in this roll, i.e. sorting out which events, bookings, and manning of stands, materials, etc.,

He will be working with Dave G0AYD and Neil G7EBY, and of course any other individuals who volunteer (are coerced / press-ganged) their assistance for specific events.

We are currently considering having a presents at Bournemouth ARC, Yeovil QRP, South Gloucestershire Radio Rally, West Rally @ Frome and Andover RAC Boot Sale.

MEETING - 30th January

Hi All,

Just a very brief posting, to advise that after what was a very constructive and professional meeting, which was attended by 24 individuals, it would appear that GB3JB HAS A FUTURE.

The management and support team now consists of 12, which is a great improvement on 3.

I am not going to go into detail here, at this time, but all should be revealed within the next week or so, when a couple of outstanding items are finalised.

Needless to say, Clem, Peter and myself are very pleased with the outcome and we are very grateful to all who attended. The majority of whom came quite significant distances, and basically gave up their entire Sunday to show support for the GB3JB project.

To those of you who were unable to attend, but did show your support via e-mail, and further donations - you have all of our thanks.

GB3JB - OFF-AIR - THEFT !

Hi All,

Well, in my communication of the 29th December, I stated.... "Unless anything unexpected happens, then GB3JB, will keep going until the end of October 2011, when the site fee is due and the insurance is also due for renewal."

I must have tempted fate ........

Since over the last day or so, we believe, the Solar Panel was stolen from the site.

Having arrived at the site for a general inspection and battery voltage check, it very quickly became obvious that the panel was missing.

The bolts securing the brackets that held the panel and its frame to the wall had been removed, and the panel and the entire mounting frame assembly have been stolen.

The battery voltage, nominally 24 volts, and typically floating between 25 and 27 volts, was down at 13.5 and despite the turbine rotating at a reasonable speed and gusting to quite high speeds, it could not be determined if charging was taking place or not.

GB3JB was switched off at approx., 10:30 am, this morning, 3rd January 2011.

Of primary concern are the batteries themselves, the turbine and the charge controller.

The latter, which is microprocessor controlled and contains significant quantities of IC's could well have been damaged by what must have been a significant transient spark / current surge that would have occurred when the cable to the solar panel, was cut.

As will be appreciated the batteries themselves could well have been damaged, having been discharged to that terminal voltage in the very cold ambient temperatures.

We are not sure, at this time if the turbine has been damaged in anyway, either, as the turbine assembly contains the a.c. generation to d.c. supply rectification.

I will return to the site tomorrow, with suitable equipment, and have a look at the battery condition.

If the terminal volts are still low, then we really could have a problem, as this would point to the turbine having been damaged.

So to the B*@&$#d's who stole the panel ....

(1) I hope that you blew-up the isolating diodes when you cut the cable, which would probably render the panel useless, and

(2) if not, I wish you a very early and very expensive disaster when you connect it to some kit, especially if you think it’s a 12v module.

The theft has been reported to the Police. However, the chances of them being able to track down the culprits, is somewhat slim, at best.

I'll send out a further e-mail after my visit to the site tomorrow.

Please let us know, if you hear of anyone trying to sell off what is a very expensive and physically large solar panel, cheaply.

Please feel free to forward this communication on to any individuals whom you feel would be interested in its contents.

THE FUTURE OF GB3JB & GB3WX.

Hi All,

Firstly. I hope that you all had a pleasant Christmas and are ready for whatever the New Year holds for you; nothing but good things, I hope.

Secondly. Sorry for what is a very long and detailed, but very important, communication.

Now to business.

The primary purpose of this e-mail, however, is to advise you of a meeting, to discuss the future of GB3JB and the potential impact on GB3WX.

As you are one of the repeaters’ previous / existing financial supporters or simply just a user, you have been invited to attend a very critical meeting.

The meeting will take place on Sunday 30th January 2011.

The location being the Methodist Church Hall, Wincanton, Somerset. The entrance being via the Memorial Hall car park.

Start time being 1:30 pm SHARP. (Doors will open at 1:00 pm).

Light refreshment will be provided.

There will be a small charge of £1 per person, made on the door, to assist with the Hall fee and cost of refreshments.

Since it is important to know how many will be attending, so that suitable seating and appropriate refreshments can be organised, it is important that you confirm if you will be attending.

Please indicate your Full Name and Callsign on all responses, since not all of our e-mail circulation list can be associated with a specific name or callsign.

Confirmation of your attending should be sent to gb3jb.repeater@googlemail.com as soon as possible, but not later than Sunday 23rd January 2011.

An acknowledgement of the receipt of your confirmation of attending will also be issued, via the above e-mail.

It will perhaps be useful for you to know why this very important meeting is being called.

As you are all aware, several months ago, on 19th October, I e-mailed you all with an outline of the situation, and asking for support.

As you may have gathered by now, very little was received.

However, our thanks to those of you who offered suggestions regarding the PSU issue. Most helpful, and that problem was resolved.

Only around £170 has been received in donations, to date, mostly from the usual half dozen or so, and there has been no interested parties offering to get involved in the maintenance / technical side of things.

Since its inception, both Clem (G3UGR) and myself (G3ZXX) have run GB3JB on what we like to call ‘a benevolent dictatorship’ basis. With accounting support from Peter (M0ACD), and assistance from other willing helpers, when required. In some respects, this was likely to be the eventual case with GB3WX.

Also, when there has been a shortfall in funds, to cover site fees or insurance or the costs associated with unexpected repairs or replacement parts etc., then we have again covered this expenditure, ourselves.

However, this situation must now change.

Age, environment and lifestyle etc., impact on health. AS will be appreciated by all, and these issues have finally caught up with both Clem and myself, with neither of us is in a position to carry on, as we have.

Both of us are now suffering from serious long term and ongoing health problems, with the obvious physical and financial implications.

Clem and myself are not looking to claw back the significant amounts of money that we have invested in GB3JB and the GB3WX project.

However all existing supporters and users need to understand that we can no longer do this for you.

Therefore, the time has come for others to have to step into what is going to become a significant breach, during the coming year.

Having stated that, Clem and I will be happy to provide as much support as we can for as long as we can.

Unless anything unexpected happens, then GB3JB, will keep going until the end of October 2011, when the site fee is due and the insurance is also due for renewal.

As a supporter of GB3JB and/or GB3WX, you have made a donation/s to its maintenance and running, or as is the case with GB3WX, its construction and development.

We would therefore request that you make every effort to attend, as your views are of the utmost importance to us.

As a user of GB3JB, you are very welcome to attend and participate in the discussion. However, since you have not made any direct financial commitment to GB3JB, at any time, prior to the issue of this meeting notification, then you will be excluded from any vote/s that may take place.

Where any vote/s do take place, then each individual supporter, present at the meeting, shall have 1 vote per item voted upon.

However, where more than 1 individual is present, representing any club, group or society etc., which has made a donation/s to GB3JB or GB3WX, then only 1 vote per vote shall be available irrespective of the number of individuals that are present from any club, group or society etc.,

With specific regard to GB3WX, although somewhat delayed regarding final installation, GB3WX has been on air several times since getting its NoV, and has had significant additional financial input from Clem, Peter (G3BPM) and myself, over the last 6 months or so. GB3JB / GB3WX Update .......

YES Folks...

Your eyes don't deceive you, I'm updating the web site and e-mail you the info.

Firstly, I must apologise for letting things fall by the wayside, but as some of you are aware, everything has not been that good on the health front - Heart by-pass surgery, with various complications and on-going problem with medication. However, we are finally on the mend. I hope !

Poor old bugger .......

Well, down to business.

GB3JB / General Update.

Yes, the turbine got repaired - £280 or so, plus a tank full of diesel, plus shipping costs.

Yes, the turbine got installed - after much new constructional work by Clem, G3UGR.

The turbine is now mounted on a hinged, wind-up / wind-down mast system. Another £130, or so, for the winch, pulleys, heavy duty masting, brackets, clamps, winch cable, power cable extension, etc., plus numerous litres of diesel.

Yes, the system kept going over the Summer months, with just the Solar panel and the system on low power.

JB went back on full power, almost 2 weeks ago.

Also, additional problems that have been encountered. The 'DUMP LOAD' went open circuit, due to a breakdown in the physical structure of the internal connections and the heat insulating material. This was initially repaired by Clem. However, it eventually needed to be replaced - another £125.

At this point it was found that the voltage / bypass regulator had a problem, probably resulting from the failure of the dump load. It was constantly in 'load shedding' mode as opposed to 'power dumping' mode. Unless resolved, this risked damaging the batteries further.

Fortunately, while I was attempting to source a new regulator, in a sensible time scale, Clem stripped down the existing unit and was able to HAND DRAW out the circuit diagram and was able to determine the fault and repair. Thus saving £250 that we would have had to find.

At this point I feel that everyone should be made aware of just how much of the load has been carried by Clem, over the last few months.

CLEM, THANK YOU.

Without any exaggeration, without Clems effort JB would have effectively closed down and none of the repair or installation work would have been carried out. All users of JB own Clem a great deal of gratitude.

Thanks must also go to those few individuals who were able to provide 'muscle' power on site, when Clem was going to the site. Thanks are also due to those who offered, but were unavailable at the appropriate times.

In addition to the above expenditure, a further £379, has been spent on additional batteries to support the additional loading that GB3WX will place on the power system, and a further £350 on a custom, dual cross-band controller for GB3WX, from the USA.

As some of you may well have determined, by now, this money had to come from somewhere, there being very little in the JB coffers. The somewhere being Clems, Peter G3BPM's, and my pockets.

Now as you should all by now be aware, November is when the site insurance is due - £232 this year, and December is when the site fee of £150 is due.

So, it's really a case of us holding out the hat and as usual saying that "donations will be very welcome".

However, we feel that we should make it clear, that various individuals have previously made some very generous donations towards these annual ongoing costs, for which we are of course very appreciative.

Unfortunately, some regular users have not made any contribution, at all, ever. We guess that everyone will know which group they sit in.

Also, in previous years, any shortfall in donations has been met by ourselves. However, bearing in mind the additional expenditure which has been met by Clem, Peter and myself in order to keep JB running and too prepare for GB3WX, we feel that the annual expenditure will have to be met by the users.

Funding of UK repeaters, has always been a bone of contention. Fortunately, we have been very lucky in the past, relying on donations and the generousity of users. We would like to feel that we can keep JB, and WX for that matter, open to all.

With regard to the GB3JB web site. There will be some significant changes to the style, layout and content over the next few weeks and I shall be endeavouring to keep it as up to date as regularly as I did previously.

GB3WX Update.

As has been indicated above, we now have the pucka controller from the states and additional deep discharge batteries.

Clem is now looking at working his magic, to interface the controller with the existing logic, decoders and other hardware.

Once this is done we will be able to re-install on site, and comence the process of sorting out the breakthrough, onto GB3JB, which occurs when the system is simultaniously beaconing on 10m and 6m.

We have several ideas as to the cause and probable cures. However, since the problem is only seen, on site, little can be done until the kit is back at the site.

The computer and software for data loging and 'through audio' recording, all appear to be working OK. However, we do still need to source a PSU that will enable us to run the system from the 24v dc rail. There are various units available, but all appear to be at what can be described as rediculous prices. It may be that we end up building our own.

The aim is to get GB3WX on air and fully functional by the end of November.

However, we are looking for donations, here as well. The equipment will need to be insured; added to the existing all-risks, third party and public liability policy.

The renewal fee as shown above, does not of course include for this additional equipment. Initial assessments indicate that we are looking for around an additional £125, to cover the GB3WX equipment.

With regard to the GB3WX/TWXRG web site. There will also be some significant changes to the style, layout and content over the next few weeks and I shall be endeavouring to keep it as up to date as regularly as I did previously.

Turbine Down .........

The turbine was removed from the site this morning, Saturday 29th.

Thanks to M0SMM Steve; G3VEH Chris; G7EBY Neil; M3ZVR Barry; for assisting Clem G3UGR in getting the thing down.

Hopefully, we'll be able to get it repaired within the next couple of weeks.

As previously advised, the repeater system is now only being supported by the Solar Panel, so whoever it is that has been doing the rain dance, please STOP !!!

GB3JB Back Up On Full Power / Update ...

Hi All,

GB3JB is now back at full power 25 watts ERP, although it is still only being supported by the Solar Panel.

Having monitored the batteries over the last few days, the excellent WX conditions with plenty of sunshine / UV, has enabled the Solar Panel to maintain the batteries at full / above full charge. Although we are aware that JB has not seen it usual level of activity over the last week.

We shall continue to monitor the situation, and will reduce power again should the need arise.

With regard to the turbine. Clem and myself visited the site yesterday and as reported by several users, the turbine had started turning again. A strong gust of wind had obviously freed the jammed bearing. However, it was making significant clunking noises, therefore we have restricted the turbine blades to stop them turning and causing greater damage.

I understand that it has been agreed between Clem and various others that they will lower the turbine, for dismantling and repair, on Saturday morning. Thanks to those who have agreed to assist Clem. It is much appreciated.

Please feel free to use the repeater as per normal, again.

We Need YOUR Help

Hi All,

Sorry, but I have to advise that GB3JB, has had to be switched to LOW Power, approx., 10 watts ERP.

Problem No 1.

It would appear that a bearing in the wind turbine may have gone, as it is no longer turning !

Therefore, the only power source, keeping the batteries topped-up, is the Solar Panel. Hence the reduction in output power.

We therefore need to lower the mast which has the turbine on it, so as to do an inspection and determine the actual problem, and organise the repair.

This gives us two further problems.

Problem No 2.

As some of you may be aware, I am, (as is the case with several other JB supports,) recovering from major Heart surgery, (a quad bypass) and am unable to assist Clem, with this urgent requirement.

We are therefore looking to you, the users and supporters, to offer your physical assistance.

The last time we had to do some work on the turbine it took 4 of us, and we only just managed it. I'm unavailable, and my Son is currently in the Golf - Pirate Bashing, as he puts it.

Clem will need the help of 3 or preferably 4 strong individuals, to assist with the lowering of the mast/turbine assembly. This is a total of around 135 Kgs, with the bulk of the weight being at 20 feet in the air.

At least 1 of the individuals will have to be happy, up a ladder, (that's usually my role, HI.).

As I am not going to be able to take part in the fun and games, Clem would like anyone who is able to offer assistance, to make direct contact with him, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, via his e-mail address: clement.tabor@btopenworld.com

Problem No 3.

As most will be aware, GB3WX the 6m/10m Cross-band repeater and beacon system is located at the same site, as JB.

As you are also aware it is currently off-air whilst we are resolving a breakthrough problem, associated with JB. The GB3WX ident is getting into the GB3JB system and being re-transmitted over GB3JB, when JB is in use !

This system takes significant levels of power, approx twice as much as JB, and therefore GB3WX will not be put back on air, until the turbine has been repaired, even if the breakthrough problem is resolved, prior to that time.

SO FOLKS IT'S OVER TO YOU - WE REALLY DO NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE ....

Let's keep our fingers crossed, that we have lots of clear, bright, sunny days, with lots of UV, over the next few weeks, while we get the turbine problem sorted.

Interruption To Service.....

As some of you may have noticed, GB3JB was off-air from 4:45pm through to 6:20pm yesterday, 2nd.

Clem, Paul (M3BDI) and myself needed to replace a damaged guy, resulting from the gales over the weekend. This required the mast to be lowered.

While we were at it, we replaced all the main top guys, as these were also showing signs of degredation.

GB3JB came back on air at approx., 3:45 pm this afternoon, running on 8 watts ERP.

The batteries are still quite low - the d.c. rail is only 22.8 volts, so we still have quite a way to go to get the system back up to a fully charged state. It shows how little UV and wind there has been at the site over the last 5 days.

The forcast for tonight and tomorrow is for high wind, so with a bit of luck, we should get a good charge over the next 24 hours.

However, it would be appreciated if use is kept to a minimum, for the next day or so.

Dave, G3ZXX, is planning to go up to the site tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon, to return the repeater to it's nominal 25 watts ERP, if the batteries are back to their nominal status, by then.

GB3JB Off Air ........

Hi All,

Pleased be advised that GB3JB is currently off-air. It was switched off at approx., 3:20 pm yesterday afternoon.

Due to the poor charging conditions - low wind speeds for the Turbine over the last week or so and very little Sun / thick cloud cover for the Solar panel over the last few days, the battery voltage had dropped to the critical level and the safety trip switch was activating.

Again, thick cloud and very little wind, so far today, Friday.

Clem and Dave will go back to the site tomorrow afternoon (Saturday), and check the charge state. If it is at an acceptable level, they will switch 'JB' back on again. However, it may well be at the reduced output level, 8w instead of the nominal 25w ERP, to give the batteries further time to fully recover.

The Rig Register is a simple site that allows users to store their details and serial numbers of various equipment types.

These can then be marked as lost or stolen and checked by the participating shops and second-hand purchasers, as well as amateur radio clubs, etc.

The purpose, is to enable a winch arrangement to be installed to enable easy raising and lowering of the antenna mast, when required.

ISS Tracking.......

As we occasionally get some QRM from the ISS, we thought that it might be useful to provide the ISS tracker, opposite.

It might just give us clue as to when we might expect to get some interference on the repeater output frequency, but it could well be useful for those who may be interested in listening on 144.800 for the stations working through the on board 70cm/2m repeater.

Hi All,

GB3JB was put back on-air at approx., 1730 local time, Tuesday 22nd.

Whilst we were carrying out the initial work for the GB3WX antenna system, we checked out the 'JB' systems.

All the batteries were fully charged and both the turbine and solar panel were developing power.

The antenna VSWR was 1.2:1 and based on the power output from the filter system, nominal feeder loss and nominal antenna gain, the system was operating at 14 dBW erp.

Site Developments.....

Hi All,

Just thought that it would be useful to bring you up to date, with developments.

As you are probably aware, it has been decided to allow The WesseX Repeater Group to install an up-dated GB3WX (6m / 10m cross-band repeater), at the 'JB' site.

This repeater having previously been operational, as a 6m repeater, from a site near Kilmington, in South Wiltshire.

This development is of course subject to them receiving approval from the authorities, to change the repeater parameters and it's location.

With regard to 'JB' and its supporters, we perceive that there are no significant implications for either the repeater or its funding.

Like 'JB', The Wessex Repeater Group are funded by donations and they will be funding all the cost associated with their project.

With regard to electrical energy, they will be tapping into the 'JB' supply.

However, we do not see this as a problem as more often than not we are shunting energy into the dump load, to prevent the existing batteries from being over charged.

The only implication for TWXRG, in this respect, is the need or them to supply us with some additional batteries to support their additional power loading, when no charging is taking place.

TWXRG will also be expected to either organise their own insurance, which will offer the same or better cover than our own policy, or they will be expected to pay for the additional costs associated with adding their equipment to our policy schedule.

TWXRG will also be expected to contribute 50% of the annual site fees.

Between now and the end of June, 'JB' will go off-air for a short period of time, which should last no longer than a few hours, while changes are made to the antenna support structure to facilitate the installation of the proposed GB3WX antenna's at the site.

This is so that TWXRG can carry out test transmissions from the site, on both 6m and 10m simplex freqiencies.

We will advise you all as soon as the date is known.

6m to 10m Cross-band Repeater.

The WesseX Repeater Group is proposing that a 6m to 10m cross-band FM voice repeater be established in South Wiltshire, on the site currently occupied by GB3WX.

As can be seen, from the GB3WX coverage area, the 6m coverage of the system will be significant, and it is anticipated that the 10m coverage should be very similar.

There is of course the potential for significant Sporadic E's and MUF DX propagation, which should of course significantly improve with the increase in solar activity, as we start to move towards the next solar maximum.

Therefore, as this would be an significant and ground breaking project as cross-band repeaters have not previously be allowed in the UK, prior to making the formal application to the ETCC / Ofcom we need to assess the level of support that such a system would receive from the Amateur community.

After my first experiance of power line technology transmissions, recorded by a friend up in Bedford, myself and many others have become aware of the threat that the WHOLE HF band could and will be thwarted with nasty digital noise from 2-34 MHz, if the devices that provide home networking through the mains wiring are continued to be allowed to be sold.

M6ZAP (Paddy) is an affected user, give him a call (or me) on 'JB' to hear the dreaded noise.

Some units do notch our bands, (except 5MHz,) but the noise is still accross the broadcast bands and the rest of HF.

Ofcom have and are removing the devices from people's property's, FREE of charge. Yes folks, you don't have to pay a penny, if you are not the origionating source of the QRM!

The origional 'test' in a foriegn 'test house' failed them, but a second test in Germany, let them pass, because they were in standby mode! (Direct source of this information is on the www.UKQRM.org (website.)

This amazing new technology is NOT legal, but like LPD 433-434MHz trancievers and the like, has crept into our market without warning. Next will be broadcast FM no doubt!

The range can be quite astonishing, up to 1/4 of a mile in one case!

Although, as is indicated, some units notch some amateur bands, the interference does spread into the LF and HF ends of the bands, and although weak and not necessarily causing too many problems to SSB users, it is still be a major problem to users of Digital Modes, like myself, with noise spikes every 50Hz !

It is also impossible for me to attempt to listen to any short-wave broadcasts.

Question. Don't transmissions from legal broadcasters, like the BBC and BFBS, even if on the shortwave bands, come under the heading of a "protected service" ?

As with the first petition, I have signed this new one.

Whether or not you are directly effected, it is important that the authorities are obliged to enforce the Law and that these devices and anything similar are removed from the market, as well as from the users installation, where any interference is reported.

I also urge you to sign the petition.

International Marconi Day - Andover Club...

Members of the Andover Club will be operating the special events station, GB8IMD, in celebration of the Marconi transmissions from Salisbury plain, in 1897.

The group will be operational from midnight on the 24th April, through until 15:00 on the 25th.

They will be operating ssb, cw and psk 31 on 80, 40 and 20m, as well as some 2m simplex and GB3JB.

They have a delta loop for 20 mtrs and various other antennas supported by 3 x 60 foot pump up masts.

Please take some time to give them a call. It will be much appreciated.

Lets hope they have good weather.

GB3JB Systems Check....

Hi All,

Dave, G3ZXX, carried out a regular site visit / systems check, this afternoon.

The batteries were all fully charged, with the main nominal 24v regulated dc supply voltage being at 26.55 volts. The nominal 12v dc supply to the repeater was at 13.77 volts, in standby, and 13.64 volts in TX mode with an input signal at the RX.

The turbine was turning freely, the solar panel was providing 1.6 A, with the Sun side on, and the 'dump load' was intermittently humming. Thus confirming the charge state of the batteries.

RF power outputs were also checked, and again all were at their nominal levels, giving approx., 25 watts erp, based on the nominal feeder losses and nominal gain of the antenna.

All external fixings were checked as were the mast guys. All were in order.

In all, 'JB' was effectively off air for around 5 minutes, whilst the RF power levels were checked.

MSARC - G3HAT Talk.......

Hi All,

Not that we have anything specifically to do with the Mid-Somerset Amateur Radio Club, we don't, but we thought that the content of a e-mail received from Shaun, would be of interest to our supporter, users, and of course visitors to our web site.

Over the years there has been much written about cross-field antennas. In fact there is probably as much controversy about the CFA in the antenna world, as there is about cold fusion in the nuclear physics world.

However, for the coming meeting of the MSARC, on the 14th April, Shaun has secured a talk to be given by G3HAT himself. The title being "New Forms Of Antenna", and I guess that the CFA will almost certainly get a mention.

ETCC Position statement on 2 Metre band GMSK Proposals.

The following statement is taken from the ETCC web site at: http://www.ukrepeater.net/index.html we felt that it may be of interest to viewers of our web page.

"Amateurs who use the 144MHz band will be only too well aware of the congestion being experienced in this band especially in the Midlands and South East.

To enable the ETCC to make an informed decision on best use of the band in the future, a complete frequency re-planning exercise was carried out for England and Wales, using computer simulation and taking existing repeaters as the base model.

The output of this exercise was a new plan which re-assigned frequencies with a probability of less then 5% interference but with NO spare capacity.

When additional repeaters were entered into the model, the interference level increased to unacceptable levels.

This suggests that maximum use of available channels has already been reached in central and southern England.

As a consequence of this, the ETCC have agreed that proposals for GMSK nodes in this band can no longer be recommended to Ofcom unless the proposal incorporates a plan to either:

a) close down an existing repeater in the area, replacing it with a digital node at a location which retains the same general coverage characteristics.

b) or convert the repeater to dual mode working.

Dual mode working in this context means analogue and digital operation on the same site using the same frequency.

Just some advanced notice, that 'JB' will be going off this coming Saturday (1st Nov) and subject to any unforseen problems, will be back on either Saturday evening or as is more likely, on Sunday.

The reason for the temporary closure is to install some additional facilities associated with the repeater control system.

There will be NO impact to the operational characteristics as far as users are concerned. The changes are with respect to control capabilities.

Unfortunately, this upgrade cannot be implemented, on-site.

GB3JB System & Donations Update....

Hi All,

Just a quick email to advise that Dave went up to the site, this morning, to check on the system and all was as anticipated, OK.

The batteries were fully charged, as the dump-load was continuously humming to itself, and the turbine was spinning freely.

The individual battery volts, ranged from 13.30 to 13.41 volts, with the nominal 24v DC supply rail measuring 26.7 volts, either on or off load.

The unregulated output from the solar panel was 27.5 volts, and the output current was varying between 0.4 Amps with the Sun fully shrouded, to just under 5 Amps in bright sunshine.

The DC supply to the repeater system was at 13.75 volts.

The repeater output was as expected, and the VSWR at the input to the antenna feeder was less than 1.3:1, hence JB is running at its nominal 14 dBw / 25w ERP.

The mast and guys were also OK.

So all is still well in the GB3JB world.

Our thanks should go to Tony, G3WRV, and Alan, G7MYI, for their recent donations. They are very much appreciated.

GB3JB - Insurance & Site Fees......

Hi All,

GB3JB's initial set-up funding, of approx. £5000, was donated by the 55 individuals and organisations, listed as supporters. However, we are rapidly approaching our 1st birthday and consequently the renewal dates for both the insurance and site fee.

The annual All Risks and Public Liability Insurance renewal premium is £165.33p and the annual Site Use Fee is £150.00p.

As GB3JB, is soley funded by donation, as you have probably guessed by now, we are asking for donations to cover these annual expenses.

We are all very pleased that over 190 different individuals have been logged using JB over the last 9 months or so, which is excellent, and gives a good indication of coverage and potential.

However, of the regular users, most of whom contributed to the initial set-up costs, a significant proportion do not yet appear on our supporters list.

We would like to think that if you fall into this latter category, you will be willing to provide some tangible support, to enable JB to be kept on air for the next 12 months, as it would seem a little unfair to rely on the same individuals to keep the system running.

Even if you are not a regular user, but would like to support JB, any donation would be very much appreciated.

Hi All,

Just to let you know that Chris G6WHI now has a crystal controlled CTCSS encoder kit available for £9.50 + VAT.

It includes pre-programmed processor, all components and a gold plated PCB, 29mm x 49mm.

It uses an 8 step D/A convertor and a low pass active filter to give a signwave output with minimal amplitude variation and can encode the 10 UK CTCSS tones.

The tone is selected by the combination of 4 jumpers.

It's powered by 7 to 16V DC and draws only a few mA.

There is an encode enable input that connects to the radio's PTT line (active low), and the tone select inputs are constantly read so you could change tone with a switch, or you can tie the encode enable input to ground for continuous encode.

There's about 2V p-p output.

GB3JB System Status.....

Hi All,

Just to let you know that Dave G3ZXX, made a visit to the site this afternoon, to have a look at things, as we have had some strong winds and rain over the last few days.

All was OK. No problems with the guys or fixings.

He also checked the battery volts. The nominal on load dc voltages were 26.5v, for the 24v rail and 13.7v for the 13.6v rail. The batteries were fully charged as the 'dump load' was humming to itself, and there was less than 0.4v between the highest and lowest individual 12v 105 AH battery voltages.

The turbine was turning at a good speed, feathering in the gusts, and the solar panel was supplying between 0.5 and 3.5 Amps, varying with the changes in cloud cover.

So at this point in time all appears to be well at the 'JB' site.

Over the last couple of weeks it has come to our attention that we have yet again gained the attention of the sad individual/s who are obviously incapable of coherent speech and have nothing better to do with their time than to repetitively 'bleep up' the repeater and not give a callsign.

There is really only one rule with regard to these individuals - TOTALLY IGNORE THEM.

Do NOT respond in any way what so ever, it only further feeds their immature need - they have wound someone up enough, to give them a response and further encouragement to continue.

Remember: If you do not hear a callsign, do not respond...... EVER.

Routine Maintenance - Done

Hi All,

The planned maintenance was carried out yesterday PM.

Minor changes to the beacon id were made, along with the installation of a meter to moniter the output of the solar panel.

The batteries were all fully charged, with only 0.3v difference between individual batteries. The main DC supply voltage being at its nominal 25.6 volts. DC supply to the repeater was at its nominal 13.7 volts.

RF power outputs were also checked, and again all were at their nominal levels. The antenna VSWR was measured at 1.35:1

In all, 'JB' was off air for around 40 minutes, whilst the work was carried out.

Controller Changes......

Hi All,

Just to confirm that the ctcss access tone was changed, to 88.5hz, this evening as previously advised.

The following changes were also made:

1. Time out setting was changed to FOUR minutes.

If you waffle for more than 4 minutes you will time out.

If you do not WAIT for the invitation to transmit 'pip' you will only get the remainder of the previous stations 4 minutes, resulting in you probably timing out. Plus you could prevent other stations from calling in.

2. Following on from comments regarding the beacon length, the speed has been increased to 15 WPM and the information transmitted now only consists of the repeaters callsign.

3. The period between the end of a user stations transmission and the invitation to transmit 'pip' has been increased to give slightly more time for other stations to call-in. Please wait for the 'pip'

The repeater was off air between 18:25 and 18:45

Change of ctcss tone to 88.5hz - Update

Hi All,

This change will take effect on the 1st May. However, due to work committments, probably not till late afternoon or early evening.

As the regular users of GB3JB will have noticed, we have recently been suffering from interference from users of GB3PC, who put a strong signal into the 'JB' site and are splattering across the 'JB' input frequency, presumably as a result of not having a narrow deviation capability on their equipment.

Because GB3PC has the same ctcss access tone as GB3JB, this has resulted in our repeater opening up at various times, and retransmitting the splatter along with the invitation to transmit tone, for, in some cases, significant periods of time.

We can obviously do nothing with regard to the stations splattering across the 'JB' input, other than to perhaps ask all operators to switch to narrow a deviation setting, if their equipment has that option.

Therefore, following on from communications with our zone manager on the ETCC, in an attempt to reduce the potential for interference, and to stop 'JB' opening up, as described above, we have decided to change the ctcss tone that is required to access 'JB', from it's current 71.9 hz, to 88.5 hz. Obviously the tone transmitted by the repeater will also change to this new frequency.

In addition to emailing this information to all on the blanket email update list, we will be adding it to the web site. The ETCC will also be changing the data on the "ukrepeater.net" web site. However, it would be appreciated if this could be mentioned to all those that you work via 'JB' and / or simplex, in the intervening period, as there are more users of 'JB' than we have on the email list.

It would also be appreciated, if those associated with radio clubs etc., within the 'JB' coverage area, could bring this information to the attention of their members.

Solar Panel Installed.......

Hi All,

Just to advise that Clem (in Pic) and I managed to fully install the solar panel, this afternoon. Even in the overcast light, it was generating volts & current.

Hopefully this addition, along with the additional batteries, previously installed, should see us through periods of little or no wind.

When we left the site, the batteries were just about fully charged, and the turbine was freely turning and generating lots of power.

The panel has been mounted in an alluminium frame, backed with varnished ply wood, and the entire assembly is bolted to the barn wall.

The panel is connected into the power system via 20 Amp armoured cable.

Operational update

Hi all,

Clem and myself went to the site this evening (Saturday) to check things out.

The turbine appears to be working fine, the new 200AH of batteries are steady at 25.9 volts, the regulator is indicating that they are fully charged, the energy from the turbine is warming up the dump load quite nicely and the turbine itself is feathering in the strong gusts of wind.

So all appears to be fine with 'JB' at this moment in time.

We also measured up for the fixings for the solar panel. At this moment in time, I have 3 days off shift this week, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday. So, we hope to be able to get the solar panel installed, by next Sunday evening, assuming everything comes together.

CTCSS Encoders For Older Rigs....

Knowing that there are quite a few amateurs out there who are only able to monitor 'JB', because there older tranceivers do not have a ctcss facility, we felt that the following information may well be of interest.

Tony, G6FIB, has a quantity of two types of ctcss modules available. They are easy to install and instructions for wiring and ctcss frequency selection are available.

'JB' Back To Full Power......

Hi All,

Just to confirm that we installed the new turbine this morning, and the repeater was switched back to high power, 25w ERP, at approx., 1:00pm local time today.

Our thanks to FuturEnergy, for the excellent service they have provided.

The additional 200AH of batteries are still being cycled, so we only have the original 100AH available at this time. We will confirm when the additional batteries are installed.

We are collecting the 160 watt solar panel later today, but have to construct and mount a frame to hold it. Again, we will keep you up to date on the progress with this new addition to the 'JB' system.

Our thanks must also go to those amateurs who, through their additional financial support and assistance, made it possible for us to purchase the additional batteries and the solar panel.

RSGB Train the Trainers Session

We went up to the site, but unfortunately, it was blowing a gale and raining when we got there at 11:00 am. It had not eased, by 11:45, so we called it a day.

Unfortunate, Dave had taken a days leave, based to the weather forecasts indications of a calm / dry spell late morning. Should have known better !

We will now try to install the turbine around Dave's work schedule, but it may now not be until early next week.

We will continue to operate 'JB' on the rotating battery bank and on low power, basis .

We have just had a telephone call from the turbine suppliers, FuturEnergy, indicating that our assumption was correct, in that the winding had burnt out. As to the cause, they are still investigating.

They advised that they have shipped a NEW unit to us, this afternoon, for delivery on Monday. What excellent service and support.

Depending upon when it's delivered, and the prevailing weather conditions, we will either try to install on Monday evening, or Tuesday morning.

Hi All,

Just to advise that the batteries were changed at 5:55pm this evening (Wednesday). So with a bit of luck, we should be OK for another 24 to 30 hours. The set removed, are now being recharged.

The turbine was shipped back to the manufacturer this afternoon, for delivery tomorrow.

If you are not getting the same signal strength from 'JB' as previous, just remember that we are currently on LOW power output - 8 watts ERP, and not the nominal 25 watts ERP.

The additional 200 AH of batteries arrived today. However, these will need to be cycled, prior to installation.

We are also pressing on with the purchase of a Solar Panel. More on this as soon as we have anything to report.

GB3JB Update - Turbine Failure......

Hi All,

As advised, Clem and I, with the help of M3BDI (Paul) removed the turbine this morning.

Upon close inspection, it appears that it may well have burnt out !

I think we now know what was causing the crackling on the signal on Saturday, after the winds of late Friday night / early Saturday morning.

The outside of the casing and the blades are covered in a semi-sticky coating which appears to have been thrown out from inside, by centrifugal force, see photo's.

Prior to disconnecting the turbine, we checked for the 24v battery voltage, at the turbine output leads, and it was present. So there is NO break in connection / continuity, back to the battery / controller assembly.

Once disconnected, we checked for dc resistance across the output leads.

There appears to be an open circuit, in either direction /polarity.

The turbine is currently being packed up for shipping back to the manufacturer, FuturEnergy.

The repeater, was switched on again at approx., 10:30 this morning, but as advised, it is on low power (8w) and operating only from the charged 100 AH battery bank.

The on-site batteries are now back here, being re-charged, ready to be taken to the site tomorrow evening, to replace those we put in today.

We shall continue to operate on this low power / rotating battery basis, as best we can, until the position regarding the turbine is clarified.

For those who have been asking. The turbine is covered by a two year guarantee, which we anticipate will cover the current situation. The turbine and controller having only been purchased on the 29/10/07 and installed on 26/11/07.

GB3JB Off-Air - Update

Hi All,

Further to our posting of earlier today (see below), it would appear that the turbine is dead.

Clem and I will be dismantling the turbine assembly tomorrow morning, and arranging for shipment back to the manufacturer, for inspection / repair / replacement.

In the mean time, the intention is to put 'JB' back on air, tomorrow morning, but only on low power. The system being powered by batteries alone.

The intention being that we will install a fully charged set of batteries tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, theoretically capable of supporting the system for around 24 hours.

Then on Wednesday morning we will replace the set, with another set of fully charged batteries and take the initial set off site to re-charge. This process being repeated until we can resolve the situation.

The manufacturers of the turbine have indicated that it is not really possible to give any indication of the fault, or what may have caused it, until the assembly is inspected. However, they were some what surprised that we have experienced a problem.

This problem has added new impotus to the already discussed plan to install a Solar Panel, to support the turbine.

We will keep you up to date, as usual, with what is happening as soon as we can provide more information.

GB3JB Off-Air.....

Hi All,

It never rains but it pours....

It appears that our nice 3 month old, £975, 1Kw Wind turbine, has died !

It's going round, but only just, and certainly not generating any volts.

Our assumption at the moment is that it was the strong winds on Friday night / Saturday morning, that have either damaged the main bearing, or possibly for some reason it my not have feathered and the winding has burnt out !

Clem visited the site this morning to check the system, and decided to switch the system off, so as not to damage the batteries.

We are contacting the manufacturers this afternoon, and will update later today on what is happening.

We've Got A 'Crackle' - Part II

Hi All,

Having visited the site this evening, despite the fact that the 'crackle' had cleared during the day, I could find nothing wrong with any of the connectors, cables or cavities.

The antenna also appeared to be in one piece, and despite their being a stiff wind blowing at the site, which was making the mast move about a bit, there was no 'crackle'.

The VSWR into the cavities, and the VSWR into the antenna feeder, were also OK, being below 1.2:1 in all cases.

The only thing that I did do, was to re-make the earth bonding to the antenna mast, which was showing signs of some corrosion.

I cannot report that I actually found a problem, and I could not re-produce the 'crackle', so lets hope we don't have a re-occurance.

We've Got A 'Crackle' !!!!!!

Hi All,

We seem to have developed a 'crackle' on the repeater.

It's only present when weak incoming signals are using the box. Not present on strong signals or when in beacon mode.

We perceive that the antenna, or something associated with the antenna, may well have sustained some minor damage during the very strong winds, of Friday evening / night.

Clem and Dave are going up to the site, late this afternoon (Sunday), when Dave finishes work.

Received signals, from the repeater, appear not to have reduced in strength, so hopefully it will be a quick fix.

The repeater is still on air, just with a bit of a 'crackle'.

We'll update you all later, with the outcome of the site visit.

Thanks to those who provided positive feedback and support, it is much appreciated.

It was also nice to get confirmation that my perceptions of the problems were correct.

Based on the research that has been done today, Clem and myself are investigating how we can best arrange some form of battery voltage equalisation, with our sealed cells.

Also under investigation is a suitable method of protecting the batteries from the cold.

Batteries, volts, current and cold !!!

Hi All,

Once again I have to apologise for the silence from GB3JB.

However, having carried out further site tests this evening, I think I am starting to narrow down the problems.

I perceive that we have several problems which are compounded by very low temperatures, as we have again had over the last 4 or so days.

Problem 1, appears to be associated with an inbalance between the individual battery terminal voltages. The battery with the higher terminal voltage appears to limit the amount of charging current flowing into the battery with lower terminal voltage, which actually needs a higher current to recharge fully.

Problem 2, is associated with 1 above, in that the battery with the lower terminal voltage apparently discharges at a faster rate.

Problem 3, is that although the controller is capable of providing an equalisation charge, it is not advisable to do this with sealed gel batteries - they might go BANG !

Problem 4, is the one we have seen before - very cold temperatures reducing the nominal battery capacity, and also impacts on 1 and 2 above.

Unfortunately, there is not much that we can do regarding 4. With regard to 1, 2 and 3, I am making contact with the UK distributor for the batteries, to see if they can provide any assistance / advice.

The current situation is that both gel batteries have been recharged, off site, to terminal voltages of 12.19 and 12.46 volts respectively. They are now re-installed at the site, but are currently only connected to the turbine, for continued charging.

I did power up the repeater for very brief QSO, with G4YRV, which lasted for about 5 mins. After the QSO, I checked the voltages, they had dropped to 11.96 and 12.43 volts respectively, even though the turbine was turning quite quickly, and the controller was not diverting any power to the dump load.

This raises the possibility that we may have a problem with the controller and/or the turbine itself.

My intention is to go back to the site tomorrow evening to check the terminal voltages, which will hopefully be somewhat closer together. I am also hoping to get my hands on a current clamp tomorrow, so that I can measure the actual current being supplied by the turbine.

Hopefully that clarifies the position, and you will all appreciate that we will get 'JB' back on as soon as possible.

This is a learning process for us, but after all, thats what amateur radio is all about, isn't it ?

Battery Problem

Hi All,

Sorry but off-air again. I switched it off at around 9:30 am this morning. One of the Sonnenschein Gel batteries appears to not be holding its charge. They were both fully charged, with steady terminal volts of 12.4 when installed yesterday evening. This morning one was down to below 10v; the other was still OK.

The low voltage battery took about 2 hours to get the terminal volts back up to 12v, this morning, with the turbine running at quite a fast speed, but as soon as I switched the repeater on, and loaded the supply, it droped down to under 10 volts again, within 5 mins.

We hope to have the situation resolved by late afternoon.

GB3JB Back On Air......

Hi All,

Sorry about 'JB' being off-air today, especially while propagation conditions have been so good.

It would appear that several cells in one of the batteries failed at some point during the night. Fortunately, it was in one of a set of well used 6v wet cells that had been donated to us. We had put them into the system, to see how they performed. The answer, with regard to one of the batteries, is 'not very well'.

The failure of the cells caused the nominal 24v dc rail to drop below 21v, which caused the under voltage trip circuit, which is designed top prevent the batteries from being over discharged, to shut the system down.

Having made several trips to the site today, I have replaced the batteries with the Sonnenschien dry cells, as per the original set-up, and got the system up and running at approx., 5:55 pm, this evening.

GB3JB... Latest News

Hi All,

Sorry it's been a while since the last update. Anyway, on with the NEWS.

Firstly, please be advised that if you hear the repeater 'beeping' at approx., 10 second intervals, this is a feature that has been added, to indicate when the battery voltage is getting low, and consequently it would be appreciated if QSO duration could be kept to a minimum, please. When the 'beeping' stops, the batteries are back to an acceptable level of charge.

This 'beeping' will only be audible when the repeater is actually being used for a QSO, not when it is in standby / beacon mode.

For those who have Yaesu FT1802's.

Dave, has now received his modified unit back from Yaesu UK. It would appear that apart from unspecified circuit / component modifications, the ctcss circuit required a re-alignment.

Dave is currently carrying out on air tests, and anticipates checking the rig on the test gear, tomorrow evening.

He has been asked to feedback to Yaesu UK, once the rig has been fully tested / checked. We assume that at this point we will be advised as to what Yaesu intend to do about all the units that are currently in use.

Neil G7EBY, provided the following info, in a recent email.

"Hi all, Just to let you know, I went over to wales in the week and got into JB on the Severn bridge with good signals, and also got back to Harold (M3OPW) while I was driving around Caerphilly! I couldn't hold it for long, but I made the trip. Harold rang me to confirm this, and we were both quite gobsmacked. All the best, 73's"

Public Relations & Press Release .....

A week or so ago, we were approached by the PR company for the Wind Turbine manufacturer, with regard to providing copy for a new Press Release for the company and editorial copy for the companies Newsletter, and for use on their web site.

To date we have received a draft copy of the Press Release, and will circulate copies of all the final documents, when received, to all on the update list.

We are hoping that now that GB3JB has bedded in, and all appears to be OK, that we can piggy back on this effort, and with a little modification to the bias / content, use it for ourselves, as PR to the Amateur Radio magazines.

Ebay Account .....

As with all groups, we are always looking for ways to maximise funding, and this need not always come in the form of hard cash, etc.,

To this end we have set up a GB3JB ebay account. The hope being that (a) when you have some kit you wish to sell, you will let us do it for you, subject to a very small commission, or (b) you may have some kit that you just want to get rid of and are prepared to donate it to the group.

We will be publishing further details, in the very near future.

GB3JB Back On .........

Hi All,

Just to confirm what many of you probably already know.

GB3JB is back on.......

It was switched back on at approx., 6:45 pm local time yesterday evening, operating at half-power. Sorry, but our internet was down again(!) yesterday evening.

It was switched back to full ERP at approx 10:30 am local time, this morning, (Monday 24th) after re-visiting the site and checking the battery volts.

Hopefully all should be OK, as the batteries were back to nominal terminal voltage, and the forcast for the next few days, at least, is for strong winds, so they should get a full charge.

Lets hope the WX stays seasonal and we don't get another 4 or 5 day period without any wind.......

Hi All,

Saturday evening......

Been up to the site this evening, but I'm sorry to report that there has been so little wind today that the batteries have received little charge.

Because they have been very deeply discharged, I want to get them back to a fully charged state, to make sure that they do take a full charge, before loading them, as this is the first time that we've deeply discharged them.

From reference to the technical data for the batteries, it appears that at the temperatures that we have had over the last 3 or 4 days, the batteries could have well suffered a reduction in capacity, by as much as 40%. So our 110AH batteries effectively became 65AH batteries.

As you may well appreciate, battery capacity is significantly effected by temperature. As a general rule of thumb, as temperature increases, capacity increases by around 10% for every 15 degrees F, over 66F, but conversely reduces by around 10% for every 15 degrees F, below 66F.

I've had a look at the Met Office web site, and it looks as though it will be a little warmer and windier tomorrow, so I'll take another look tomorrow evening, after work. Yes, I'm working tomorrow !

I'm sure that you will all appreciate the situation, and be a little patient.

GB3JB Off Air..........

Hi All,

Sorry folks, but I had to switch GB3JB off at approx., 09:55 pm tonight.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of wind, over the last couple of days, the batteries have discharged, and the low voltage trip on the dc-dc inverter cut in.

I have disconnected the load from the battery / turbine system.

If nothing else we now know that our calculation regarding capacity are about right, having survived a couple of days on normal usage, with little or no wind at the site.

I will re-visit the site tomorrow evening and if the batteries are recharged sufficiently, I will switch the repeater back on again and advise accordingly.

GB2RS News On GB3JB.........

Ever fancied yourself as a News reader ?

If the answer is YES, then this could be of interest to you.

It has been suggested that none of the current RSGB News readers, on 2m, adequately cover the primary area covered by GB3JB, i.e. South Wiltshire, South Somerset, North Dorset, the City of Salisbury, Salisbury Plain, the Blackmore Vale and Cranborne Chase.

It has also been suggested that the RSGB News could be transmitted via GB3JB, to ensure the accessibility of this service, to all local amateurs, who have a 2m capability.

We have no objections to GB3JB being used for this service.

However, there are certain requirements for News readers, these being:

1. There is a team of readers - at least two.

2. You can commit to reading the News on a regular basis, at least every other Sunday.

3. You have a good clear voice with good diction.

4. You can read from a script.

5. You have access to the internet.

6. You can put a good signal into the repeater – preferably fully quieting.

7. You must be a member of the RSGB – this being a requirement of the GB2RS Licence.

So, if you fancy reading the RSGB News on a Sunday morning or evening, via GB3JB, please make contact with us, as soon as possible.

Hi All,

We thought it would be of interest if we could show you some images of the site and the repeater equipment.

Unfortunately, the WX was not good on the day we took the pics. When we have a nice day, well take some images of the surrounding countryside, so that you can get a feel for the excellent take-off in all directions from the site, which is 215m asl. The antenna feedpoint being at 225m ASL (738 ft).

The montage shows, from left to right and top to bottom (below site views - image updated 05-06-08):

(a) the turbine with the antenna in the background. Both the turbine and antenna masts are clamped in four place to angle iron brackets that have been welded to the RSJ frame of the barn.

(b) the 1 kw turbine on top of its 7m galvanised steel pole, this is connected to the battery / regulator assembly via 75 feet of 60A armoured cable.

(c) the 2 x 5/8th wave antenna with roughly 4 dBD gain, don't believe what the spec sheets say hi hi, on top of its 10m alluminium pole. The antenna is connected to the circulator/isolator & cavities, via 40 feet of LRM-400 coaxial cable.

(d) the smaller battery and larger repeater cabinet.

(e) the primary 60A isolation switches and the 60A turbine regulator.

(f) the regulator dump load mounted high on the wall above the cabinets.

(g) the two Sonnenschein SL115 12v 120 AH deep cycle dryfit gel batteries.

(h) the 24v @ 20A dc to dc inverter which converts the 24v battery / turbine voltage to 13.8v to power the repeater equipment, together with the secondary isolation switch. The inverter can hold 13.8v +/- 0.1v between 17.5 and 32 volts input - not that we let the voltage get that low or high !

(i) the 4 x AFL VHF cavities, modified to Pass / Notch and the repeater module containing the modified FT8900R, the FT2600, the controller card and the 13.8v distribution board. To the left of the repeater module, just visible, is the control receiver.

Co-Channel Interference.........

Hi All,

It has come to our attention that 'JB' can suffer from occasional co-channel interference from stations using other repeaters, such as 'BF' in Bedford, but specifically 'KD' in Kidderminster.

Co-channel interference is to be expected under lift conditions, or when stations are well sited and possibly mid-way between two repeaters, or if they are poorly sited and using high power to access other repeaters on the same channel, such as 'KD' or 'BF'. However, there is of course the situation where an operator uses 50 watts, when 5 will do, simply because thats what the rig will run !

However, the problem is significantly compounded, when stations wishing to have access to more than one repeater, on the same channel, set their tranceivers to transmit one repeaters ctcss tone and then use a 1750 hz tone-burst to access another repeater !

This situation occured last night, when a station who appeared to be using the VOIP facility on 'KD' was 5/9 into 'JB', from just south of Gloucester !

The individual concerned had heard about 'JB' and had set up his transceiver to transmit a 71.9 Hz ctcss tone, irrespective of his wish, at that moment in time, to use 'JB' or 'KD'.

We are only too pleased to have stations from far and wide, using 'JB', if they have the opportunity to do so, but we would like them to be aware that they are doing so, and NOT inadvertantly preventing others from using 'JB'.

Therefore, can we repectfully request that where stations wish to have access to more than one repeater, on the same channel, they:

1. Only use the minimum power necessary to access the desired repeater - this being good practice anyway, and

2. With regard to RV63 in the south of England, they set up different memory channels, one with the ctcss of 118.8 Hz for 'KD', one with the ctcss of 77 Hz for 'BF' and one with the ctcss of 71.9 Hz for 'JB', and then label the memories accordingly - perhaps with the repeaters callsign. Of course each channel should have the power level set to that which is appropriate for each repeater, from the operators location.

The whole point of ctcss, is to prevent repeaters on the same channel from being accessed by stations who do not wish to use them.

We appreciate that there was no deliberate attempt to jam-up 'JB' and the station concerned appeared totally unaware that he could be causing a problem.

Although the potential for users of 'JB' to cause problems to users of 'KD' and 'BF' is significantly reduced, because 'JB' does not have 1750 hz capability, we do feel that this is a point worth bringing to the attention of all stations - there is a potential for un-intentional interference, even under normal band conditions.

Thus, if you are aware of any individual operators who may be in the above position / situation, could you please draw their attention to the potential problem, and offer them assistance if you feel it appropriate.
